Hibernian Stamp Catalogue value €12,000+ 11.50 by 9in. (29.2 by 22.9cm) Condition: Fine, light toning, couple of pieces missing from margin of Cross of Cong stamps. Sinn Féin members paid a halfpenny each for the stamps and affixed them to letters as a propaganda exercise. Some nationalists would not reply to a letter unless the sender affixed one of these stamps to the envelope. The 1908 Post Office Act outlawed their use after protests by MPs in the House of Commons. Their use continued however up to 1921. The Cross of The design is by Lily Williams, a noted Irish artist and nationalist supporter and friend of Arthur Griffith. The design was adopted for Irish Free State postage stamps issued from 1922 to 1968.
