118 83 Maurice Poirson (French, 1850-1882) AT THE HELM OF THE DAISY, 1879 oil on canvas signed and dated lower right 18.25 by 15in. (46.4 by 38.1cm) Frame Size: 20.5 by 17.5 (52.1 by 44.5cm) Maurice Poirson, né Maurice Pierre Alexandre Poirson, was a French painter born in Paris in 1850. In 1869, he entered the studio of French academic artist Alexandre Cabanel. Poirson was well known for his marine depictions and kindred subjects. He quickly started exhibiting at the Salon in Paris until his death in 1882. He notably won a medal at the 1875 Salon for his painting Les Moulinières and had started to built significant recognition in Parisian artistic circles by then. Maurice Poirson passed away at the early age of 36 from liver failure and left behind him an art community in mourning with artists like Edgar Degas, Alexandre Cabanel or Jean-Léon Gérôme gathering at his funeral in 1882. €6,000-€8,000 (£5,080-£6,780 approx.)
