Born in Crowhurst, Surrey, Budgen took out painting in 1910 in Paris after changing jobs several times. There, he befriended Swiss sculptor August Suter who will later drive him to move to Switzerland before WorldWar I. Budgen and Joyce would meet in the early summer of 1918 in Zürich, a decisive year for the Irish writer as he was working on his novel Ulysses. The two friends would spend time together drinking wine and discussing the progress and evolution of the novel before Joyce moved to Trieste, Italy. This work is part of a series of preparatory sketches and drawings Frank Budgen would realize throughout the years and use in the book James Joyce and the Making of “Ulysses” in which he recalls memories of their friendship and discussions around the novel itself. €5,000-€7,000 (£4,240-£5,930 approx.)
