Her work is highly figurative, and often relates specifically to folk tales, fairy tales, children’s literature and nursery rhymes. Rego lives and works in London and has exhibited widely in Britain and internationally. Since 2004, major retrospectives of her work have been held at Tate Britain, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid. She was appointed a Grand Officer of the Order of Saint James of the Sword by the President of Portugal in 1995 and a Grand Cross of the order in 2004, and was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire in the 2010 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
