(17.8 by 27.9cm) Provenance: Gifted by a friend of the artist’s family to the present owner The present owner writes: This drawing by Sidney Nolan (1917-1992) was given to my late partner, Lena Folke Olsson by Charmian (nee Clift) Johnston on leaving the employment of the Johnstons as governess to their children on Hydra in 1960. Nolan and his second wife Cynthia were good friends of fellow Australians, Charmian and George Johnston and initially stayed with them when they visited Hydra for five months over the winter of 1955-1956. Later the Nolans moved into a large villa owned by the Greek artist Nikos Ghika. Charmian Johnston told Lena that when Nolan stayed with them he was constantly drawing on whatever scraps of material were to hand. Charmian and George Johnston lived on Hydra for ten years before their return to Australia in 1964. During their time on the island they became the central figures around which the artistic and expatriate community gravitated. €700-€1,000 (£590-£840 approx.)
