(76.2 by 119.4cm) Provenance: Christie’s, 4 April 1995, lot 266; Private collection Hermann David Salomon Corrodi was raised in an artistic family and first trained under his father, Swiss painter Salomon Corrodi, in his studio in Geneva. He then studied in Rome and Paris where he attended workshops led by prominent French painters Ernest Meissonier and Jean-Léon Gérôme before befriending Dutch Romantic artist Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema in London. Corrodi travelled extensively throughout Europe, North Africa and the Near East, establishing himself as a prolific genre and Orientalist painter. His atmospheric views and refined compositions of his relentless travels attracted a distinguished clientele, counting the British and Austro-Hungarian royal families as his patrons. Corrodi exhibited across Europe, including at the Royal Academy in London in 1881 and was knighted Academic of Merit by the Accademia di San Luca, Rome, in 1893. €6,000-€8,000 (£5,220-£6,960 approx.)
