34 20 Marion Greenwood (USA, 1909-1970) PORTRAIT OF ERNIE O’MALLEY, 1932 pencil and charcoal signed and dated lower right 13.50 by 10in. (34.3 by 25.4cm) Frame Size: 21 by 17in. (53.3 by 43.2cm) Provenance: Collection of wife of the sitter, Helen Hooker; Private collection Ernie O’Malley’s book, On Another Man’s Wound, 1932, is widely regarded as the best literary depiction of the Irish Republican struggle in the 1920s. O’Malley commanded the 2nd Southern Division of the IRA during the War of Independence, took the anti-Treatyside, was in the Four Courts occupation in 1922, and was later IRA Director of Organisation until arrested following a gun-battle in which he was severely wounded. After his release he went to the United States to recuperate, and there met his wife, Helen Hooker. In later years he took a particular interest in painting and was friendly with Jack Yeats and the young Louis le Brocquy. Marion Greenwood, born in New York, was a leading social- realist painter. She travelled widely, and is best known for her murals, notably those executed in Mexico on a commission from the Government there. This portrait was probably made when both artist and sitter were in Taos. €1,500-€2,000 (£1,300-£1,740 approx.) Click here for more images and to bid on this lot20
