(100.3 by 110.5cm) Provenance: Taylor Galleries, Dublin; Private collection John Doherty was born in Kilkenny in 1949. He studied architecture at Bolton Street College of Technology, Dublin from 1968 to 1973 before moving to Sydney and beginning his career as an artist. He lived in Sydney for five years then moved to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, where he was artist-in-residence at the National College of Art. His first solo exhibition was held in Sydney, at the Coventry Gallery (1977). Other notable Australian solo shows have been held at the Rex Irwin Gallery (1978), Robin Gibson Gallery (1992) and the Australian Galleries (2000). During the early eighties he was a frequent exhibitor in group shows at the Taylor Galleries in Dublin; they also gave him his first Irish solo exhibition in 1981 and he has exhibited regularly there since. For many years he divided his time between Ireland and Australia and is represented in prestigious collections in both countries, including the National Gallery of Victoria, AIB, and the Waterford Municipal Gallery, as well as the Institute of Modern Art in Chicago.
