(85.1 by 100.3cm) Provenance: Taylor Galleries, Dublin; Private collection; Whyte’s, 18 May 2009, lot 132; Private collection Exhibited: ‘Martin Gale: Still Life Paintings’, Taylor Galleries, Dublin, 19 November to 5 December 1992, catalogue no. 13 This [1992] exhibition of oil and watercolour still life paintings originated from an earlier work entitled, The Tea Dream, which was both painted and exhibited in 1989. The Tea Dream marked a turning point in the artist’s oeuvre; a moving away from his earlier, very personal and cathartic works, towards what Gale calls, “...strong memorable images...”.
