94 89 J. TimMacDonald (fl.1899-1920s) PICCADILLY CIRCUS, LONDON, 1924 watercolour heightened with white on blue tinted paper signed and dated lower right 12 by 7.25in. (30.5 by 18.4cm) Frame Size: 18.5 by 13.25in. (47 by 33.7cm) MacDonald’s most sought after works are his London landmarks such as the present watercolour which records a much changed streetscape in central London. Dating to 1924, this painting depicts flower sellers and their customers at the base of the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain. The fountain, surmounted by a winged statue of Anteros, was erected in 1892-93 to commemorate the philanthropic works of the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury and his achievement in replacing child labour with school education. After WW2 it moved from its original position in the centre of the circus. The facade of the County Fire Office building, Regent Street can be seen here behind the red London bus to the left of the fountain. This scene must date to early 1924 as it records the building as it was before it was demolished in spring that year. Smoke billows from the chimneys of the County Fire Office and the buildings on Glasshouse Street opposite. MacDonald lived in Liverpool and London and exhibited primarily at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Examples of his works have sold through Christie’s, London among other establishments. €150-€250 (£130-£220 approx.) Click here for more images and to bid on this lot89
