195 SPRING ONLINE ART SALE - Ends Monday 30 March 2026 from 6PM 189 Reginald Arthur Borstel (Australian, 1875-1922) PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP ‘HOWTH’ oil on canvas signed and dated lower left; inscribed [The Adelaide Photo Co., Sydney NSW] lower right 20 by 30in. (50.8 by 76.2cm) Frame Size: 22.25 by 32.25in. (56.5 by 81.9cm) Reginald Arthur Borstel was born in Sydney, Australia. He was the son of a master mariner, John Henry Borstel and originally served as a seaman, before becoming best known as an artist for his portraits in oils of vessels; for repoduction as postcards or to commemorate notable events in a ships history. Borstel was employed by The Adelaide Photo Company to carry out this portrait of the ship, which would have subsequently been photographed to produce postcards for the sailors. It is for this reason the artist has reproduced the company name lower right in the composition. The ship is shown flying under the British Red Ensign and displaying maritime flags indicating “My vessel is stopped, I do not require assistance”. Description of the vessel according to the State Library South Australia -The four masted steel barque ‘Howth’, 2244 tons, under sail. Built 1892 (3) Workman, Clark and Co. Ltd. Belfast. Owners: Sir R Martin and Co. registered Dublin later CE Martin. 1905 J Edgar and Co (Howth Shipping Co.) registered Liverpool. c.1913 Windram and Co.; During WW1 fitted as a tanker and renamed ‘Horn Shell’ by Anglo Saxon Petroleum Co. registered London.
