Gillespie, a baker, did not fully enter the art world until 1977 when he retired from the family bakery and set up a professional art studio from his home in Newtownards, County Down. George Gillespie’s work represents the culmination of a notable lineage of Ulster painters who have all been chiefly concerned with depicting the Irish landscape.
