76 71 Henry Charles (‘Hal’) Bevan-Petman (British/Pakistani, 1894-1980) FISHERMAN oil on canvas signed lower right 12 by 16in. (30.5 by 40.6cm) Frame Size: 17 by 21.25in. (43.2 by 54cm) Hal Bevan-Petman was a British Indian painter, who would live and work in Pakistan following the partition of the sub- continent. He attended the Slade School of Art from 1914 and began his career in London, painting young women who modelled for him and came to be known as the ‘Petnam Girls’, when serialised in The Illustrated London News, Bystander and The Sketch. He would later paint society portraits and landscapes in British India under the Raj and was commissioned by the India Tourism Office for a ‘See India’ poster. He was an early teacher for the Hungarian/Indian artist Amrita Sher-Gil. Following partition, Bevan-Petman remained in Pakistan petitioning for compensation for mines that his family had owned in Balochistan, which had been seized by the state. Here he painted portraits of many political and military leaders. Numbered amongst his sitters were Sir Sadiq Mohammad Khan V Abbasi the final Nawab of Bahawalpur, Major Raja Aziz Bhatti and Mohammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan.
