114 173 Thomas MacDonagh [Signatory to The Proclamation of The Irish Republic in 1916] - His signature to Irish Volunteers mobilisation order. A cyclostyle 2 page typescript detailing military manoevres by the Irish Volunteers on 2-3 April 1915 in Finglas, Drumcondra, Cabra, Broome Bridge, Ranelagh, Ashtown, Santry etc. Signed in ink by MacDonagh ‘ThomD’ numbered and dated in his hand. Unique and important document, detailing the military organisation of the Irish Volunteers in the lead up to The Rising. Condition: Very good, light fold, all legible. Provenance: Adam’s, 19 April 2016, lot 82; Private collection. The Order outlines in 21 paragraphs MacDonaghs detailed plans for a training attack on the enemy reported at Finglas village, strength, one Battalion (The Finglas Battalion, I.V.), including assembly, march, attack and fall-back plans for the four battalions of the Brigade, the fourth battalion including a strong Cyclist Corps. Thomas MacDonagh, a poet and teacher from Cloughjordan, was for several years Pearse’s assistant at St. Endas. He joined the Irish Volunteers on their formation, and became Director of Training in 1914. He found he had a talent for soldiering, shown in these very clear and systematic orders, and he was Parade Marshal for the O’Donovan Rossa funeral in 1915. In the 1916 Rising he signed the Proclamation and commanded the force at Jacobs Factory in Bishop Street. He was executed on 3 May 1916.
