Despard’. Rare. 5.50 by 3.50in. (14 by 8.9cm) Condition: Fine Charlotte Despard (1844–1939) was a prominent Anglo-Irish suffragette, socialist, pacifist, and a dedicated member of Cumann na mBan, the Irish republican women’s organization. Despite being the sister of Field Marshal John French—who was the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and in charge of British forces during the War of Independence—Despard was a staunch supporter of Irish independence and the anti-Treaty side in the Irish Civil War.
