118 82 Walter Frederick Osborne RHA ROI (1859-1903) PORTRAIT OF JAMES MARSHALL MURRAY oil on canvas signed upper left 29 by 23.75in. (73.7 by 60.3cm) Frame Size: 38.5 by 33.5in. (97.8 by 85.1cm) Provenance: Adam’s, 1 May 2024, lot 350; Private collection James Marshall Murray JP, of Lowville in Merrion, Co. Dublin, was from 1860-1896 a partner in the firm of bankers and stockbrokers, Boyle Low and Murray of 35 College Green, and for the years 1878-1893 served as President of the Dublin Stock Exchange. He was also an active member of a local freemasons lodge, as indicated by a plaque on the frame which reads: “In memoriam/J. Marshall P Murray Obiit 24 Dec. 1896/Grand Secretary 1871-1878/Grand Treasurer 1886-1896”. In the original gilt-wood frame with a Combridge’s of Dublin frame maker’s label on reverse. Another version of this work, showing the sitter in three-quarter length, seated in the President’s chair of the then Dublin Stock Exchange, with a paper in his hand, exists in the Irish Stock Exchange, Dublin.
