93 SUMMER ONLINE ART SALE Ends Monday 29 June 2026 from 6PM 87 Gaetano de Gennaro (1890-1959) PORTRAIT OF JEROME CONNOR, 1943 pastel signed and dated lower right; inscribed on label on reverse 24.50 by 19.50in. (62.2 by 49.5cm) Frame Dimensions: 31.25 by 26.5in. (79.4 by 67.3cm) Born in Co. Kerry, Jerome Connor emigrated from Ireland in 1888, settling with his family in America. He learned the skills of stone carving and bronze casting at a young age and worked for a time for a monument company in Springfield, Massachusetts. While in America he was responsible for a number of major public commissions including the Spanish American War Memorial at Springfield and a standing portrait of Robert Emmet for the Smithsonian Institute, a copy of which now stands in St Stephen’s Green, Dublin. In 1925 he returned to Ireland after receiving a commission to create the Lusitania peace memorial at Cobh, a project which occupied him for many years. In 1926 he completed a bronze bust of George Russell which he cast, chased and patinated himself making it the first bronze statue ever fully completed in Ireland. During this period he exhibited several times at the RHA and at RA in London. A memorial exhibition of his work was held at the 1943 IELA and in 1993 the National Gallery of Ireland had a commemorative exhibition. €800-€1,000 (£690-£860 approx.)
