106 74 James le Jeune RHA (1910-1983) CORN FIELD oil on board signed lower left; titled and numbered [20] on reverse (concealed by backing board) 14 by 18in. (35.6 by 45.7cm) Frame Size: 19.5 by 23.5in. (49.5 by 59.7cm) James le Jeune was born in Canada in 1910 to an Irish mother and English/French father. He studied in Paris, London and New York before joining the British army. He settled in Ireland in the 1950s and took out painting professionally by then. In 1954, le Jeune had his first one-man show at the Victor Waddington Galleries. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, and became a full member by 1973. Le Jeune is known for his portraiture skills, his sitters included politician Thomas O’Higgins and actress May Craig. He also found himself painting his surroundings, from the Dublin Docks to Achill Island to Britanny and London.
