(51.4 by 81.9cm) Martin Mooney is a Belfast-born painter who studied at the Brighton Polytechnic College of Art & Design and at the Slade School of Fine Arts, London. Mooney is a prolific Irish painter who has built an important reputation and whose skills were further asserted throughout his career by the commisions he received. He was notably invited by King Charles to serve as the Official Tour Artist on two of his Royal Tours in the Baltic States and Russia and has worked on a group of six paintings for the Merrion Hotel, Dublin. Mooney’s practice can be described as being between tradition and modernity, drawing from ideals of Ancient Rome and Greece with an understanding of his current surroundings and reality. He draws inspiration from his travels in Italy, Spain, Morocco and India and focuses his practice on landscapes, cityspaces and still life. Mooney first exhibited solo with the Mitchelll Gallery, Toronto in 1994 and is represented in many private and corporate collections including the AIB Group, the Art Council Collection, Northern Ireland and Ulster Bank Group. As art critic Brian Sewell noted in 1990 in the Irish Times, “[Mooney] is one of the painters who is quite deliberately rejecting all the current idioms and trying to find a better root for his work.
