(58.4 by 68.6cm) Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the grandmother of the present owner; Thence by descent Charles Vincent Lamb grew up in Portadown, Co. Armagh working alongside his father as apprentice house painter. In 1917, he won a scholarship to study at the Metropolitan School of Art (now National School of Art and Design) under the leadership of Seán Keating. Lamb was a member of the Society of Dublin Painters, an avant-garde circle founded by Paul Henry seeking to portray a new artistic identity and style in line with the Free State. Like his peers, Lamb’s works showed a deep connection with the West of Ireland, region where he settled permanently after 1935. His academic style was praised by many, and his works were continuously showed at the Royal Hibernian Academy of which he became a full member in 1938. His depictions of Irish rural life brought him to be represented in the art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympics held in the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art. Today, Lamb’s works can be seen in all the major Irish public collections including the National Gallery of Ireland and the Hugh Lane Gallery as well as the Ulster Museum. Moneypenny’s Lock is a cnaal heritage site located on the Newry Canal just outisde Portadown.
