(43.8 by 59.1cm) Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist; Thence by descent to the present owner Ciaran Clear is best known for dramatic moonlight scenes of his native Rush in North County Dublin and of Connemara. Largely self-taught, he was inspired by various artists like Van Gogh. He was a founding member of the Fingal Artists Group in 1963, which included Maurice MacGonigal, Fergus O’Ryan, Bea Orpen, Patrick Leonard and Tom Nisbet. Together they held exhibitions throughout Ireland in a bid to make art more accessible to wider audiences. His first solo exhibition took place at the Goodwin Gallery in Limerick in 1962 and his last with Gerald Davis in Dublin in 1999. His work was part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1948 Summer Olympics in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Clear showed works at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin. He was a keen musician and was involved in his local Dramatic Society in Rush.
