He remained in Egypt until around 1886, a period that redefined his career. Rather than painting romanticizedWestern fantasies, O’Kelly adopted an ethnographic approach, documenting the authentic daily life of Cairo’s citizens. Immersing himself in the old city, he captured the vivid light of bustling brass bazaars, desert caravans, and mosque interiors. These vibrant, light-filled Egyptian scenes became his most critically acclaimed and commercially successful works. €7,000-€10,000 (£5,880-£8,400 approx.)
