IMPORTANT IRISH ART Monday 23 November 2026 from 6PM

176 138 Markey Robinson (1918-1999) GOING TO MASS, CONNEMARA, 1945 oil on canvas signed and dated lower right 18 by 27in. (45.7 by 68.6cm) Frame Size: 24.25 by 33.75in. (61.6 by 85.7cm) Provenance: Whyte’s, 14 March 2011, lot 60; Private collection This work is comparable stylistically to another early work from this period - Fortwilliam c.1940, which sold through Whyte’s in September 2009, lot 46. Early works by Markey are quite rare. This example is exceptionally rare as the artist has dated it and it is an example of the technique he developed under the tutelage of Paul Nietsche (1885-1950), an established and critically acclaimed Ulster artist of Ukrainian origin. Nietsche introduced Markey – whom he described as “a neglected genius” to Zoltan Frankl an émigré industrialist who set up textile factories in Northern Ireland during WorldWar II. Frankl was a generous and informed collector and patron of Irish art in the 1940s and 1950s – his collection included all the great contemporaries of the period including Conor, Middleton, Dillon, and O’Neill. Markey became one of his favourite artists and he described him once in an interview as the greatest living Irish artist. €8,000-€12,000 (£6,720-£10,080 approx.)
