(91.4 by 76.2cm) Frame Size: 42 by 36in. (106.7 by 91.4cm) Provenance: Family of the sitter Ben Briscoe (1934-2023) was a prominent Irish Fianna Fáil politician who served as a TD for 37 uninterrupted years and as the Lord Mayor of Dublin. Following in the footsteps of his famous father, Robert Briscoe, he was the city’s second Jewish mayor. First elected in 1965 to succeed his retiring father, Briscoe became a fixture of Irish parliamentary life, representing various Dublin constituencies until 2002. Notably, he survived a legendary, grueling ten-day recount in 1992 to secure his seat by a microscopic margin. Within his party, Briscoe was known for an independent streak, famously becoming a vocal internal critic of Taoiseach Charles Haughey’s leadership during the 1980s. €3,000-€5,000 (£2,520-£4,200 approx.)
