1601 (4 October) Mayor of Barnstaple letter regarding “the preparation
of shipping for the transportation of soldiers in to Ireland”
Interesting letter from John Delbridge, Mayor of Barnstaple dated 4
October 1601, to “Mr. Bowier” in London, about “the preparation of
shipping for the transportation of soldiers in to Ireland,” with address on
verso. The soldiers to be transported to Ireland were reinforcements for
Lord Mountjoy, who had been obliged to abandon his campaign against
Tyrone by the landing of a Spanish force at Kinsale in September of that
year.

Two pieces of gilt-stamped leather, reused on 20th century folder covers,
with King James I Royal Arms and “IR” cypher at centre of intricate

1642 (25 February) Commission for HMS Pennington signed by
Northumberland (Lord High Admiral 1638-1642)
The ship, a hired merchantman, commanded by Thomas Clarke was used for
the Irish Expedition to quell the rebellion of the October 1641. A superb
historical document.

1655 (4 June) Cromwellian soldier sells his grant of land in Ireland
A large and impressive manuscript document with wax seal signed by John
Hunter late a soldier in Col. Henry Pritties Own Troops who is selling his
grant of land in County Carlow gained for service with Cromwell’s Army.

and low. Both mix’d with some observations on the politicks of
government, relating to the incouragement of trade and increase of
wealth. With some reflections on principles of religion, as it relates to the
