Very Good Pp. xvii, 328, corrigenda, adverts. Professionally rebound in

end paper. Occasional foxing and staining. Tear to top edge of 2 leaves
of contents pages where uncut page separated at some stage. No loss of
text. Issued in a limited edition of only 200 copies. Rare.

1689 (10 May) Earl of Melfort letter to General Richard Hamilton
Jacobite Army Commander at Derry
An extremely scarce Siege of Derry letter from Melfort in Dublin to
Richard Hamilton Commander of the Jacobite forces. Interesting content
Melfort stating that “All imaginable haste has been made with the
mortar piece and cannon but they are so improvided of everything
belonging to that matter that it is not possible to get things done in any
time that’s reasonable however some of them marches this day and the
rest the next day with 10 companys more of Enstaites Regt.... There is no
news since the French went out after the English.”

1691: Original letter relating to William of Orange’s campaign in
Ireland
An extremely scarce contemporary letter written in September or
October 1691 from ‘Mr. Consul Hill’ at Cork to Robert Southwell,
Secretary of State, with a report on the behaviour of the Dutch at
Kinsale and general comments on the campaign including the Siege of
Limerick etc.

1726 County Monaghan Penal Cross
An 18th century carved fruitwood “Penal Cross”, of traditional form
under suspension loop, carved with figure of the crucified Christ in high
relief, with incised traditional iconography: obverse, a large cock above a
bowl, below the Christ figure, and “INRI” above; reverse “IHS”, arrow
pointing downward with 4 diagonal ladders and the date “1726”. Right
hand cross bar missing piece and missing part of the figure’s left arm.
Attractive and rare.
Provenance:
with a Co. Monaghan family since the 1850s. 6½ x 1¼in.

18th Century: white metal crucifix
A white metal crucifix with the corpus attached to a cylindrical cross.
Naive in style attached to a later set of rosary beads. Possibly from the
Penal Laws period. Similar crosses are attributed to Lough Derg where
they were sold to pilgrims (see example in Hunt Museum, Limerick). 5¼
x 3in. (13 x 8cm)

A naive Irish carving of Madonna and Child made from a single piece of
wood. Undated but possibly after the repeal of the main Penal Laws as
its size is not conducive to being hidden quickly. 14 x 6in. (36 x 15cm)
