[Wilde, Oscar]. 1914 postcard handwritten and signed by Lord Alfred
Douglas and other related items.
The postcard dated 14 February 1914 is to Douglas’ father-in-law,
Colonel Custance, criticising him for allowing his daughter, Olive,
Douglas’ wife to watch prize-fights in the company of Lord Clonmell and
accusing him of trying to separate her from her husband. Also 1912
letter from Robert Ross to Sir George Lewis concerning Lady Glenconner
and Lady Queensbury, The Genius of Lord Alfred Douglas by W. Sorley
Brown pp8 in original wappers, and two other items. (5)
Lord Alfred Bruce Douglas (1870-1945), nicknamed Bosie, was a British
author, poet and translator, better known as the friend and lover of the
writer Oscar Wilde. Olive Custance (1874-1944) was the only daughter
and heiress of Colonel Frederick Custance, who was a wealthy and
distinguished soldier in the British army. Custance was bisexual. In 1901
she became involved in a lesbian relationship with writer Natalie Clifford
Barney in Paris. Custance then became engaged to George Montagu, but
ran away and married Lord Alfred Douglas instead. Her father did not
approve of Douglas, and the two had eloped to avoid having problems.
They married on 4 March 1902. They had one child, Raymond Wilfred
Sholto Douglas, born on 17 November 1902. They separated in 1913,
lived together again for a time in the 1920s but separated again later,
though they never divorced.

1908 (28 April) William Butler Yeats signed letter
Typescript letter sent from 18 Woburn Buildings, London by W. B. Yeats.
Interesting content relating to a child’s poetry which has been sent to
him “...the poem about The Lily closes in a very poetical and delicate
thought ‘In thy silvery dream I am bound’. Of course one can never say
what so young a child is going to do in the future. Children of that age
occasionally write little poems, very naturally and simply. Later on come
bad models bringing with them lack of sincerity. I am very much struck
by the strong feeling for rhythm in these verses.”
