A 1998 prototype wax doll by Paul Crees of Diana Spencer in the
Elizabeth Emanuel black taffeta gown she wore on her first public
appearance as Prince Charles’ fiance. Signed and inscribed Paul Crees -
1998 - Prototype” to the nape of the neck.”
Paul Crees studied stage design at drama college and he began his
career as a wardrobe assistant on the musical Gone With The Wind at
the Drury Lane Theatre. Next he was engaged as a scenic designer for
Harkers Studio in London and designed sets and costumes for the Royal
Shakespeare Company and Glyndeboume, amongst many others. His
partner Peter Coe also has a theatre background.Crees is regarded as a
master of the poured wax doll, which enjoyed its heyday when legendary
Victorian doll makers such as Pierotti, Marsh, Montanari, Meech and
Peck. The maximum editions produced by Crees are of 50 pieces each ,
though most are much smaller editions and some are one- offs.
