GAA Football 1912 All Ireland Gold Medal to Louth.

9 carat gold by Hopkins, Dublin with Déanta in Éirinn” stamp. The medal is mounted on a 9 carat gold pin-

back to make a brooch. Inscribed “All Ireland F’ball C’ship. 1912. Won by Louth”.”

The 1912 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was the 25th All-Ireland Final, and the last to be

played at Jones Road. Antrim Mitchels led by two points with fifteen minutes to go, but Louth Tredaghs came

back to win their title, 1-7 to 1-2.In the early decades of the twentieth century, the county repeatedly contest-

ed for provincial and national football honours, winning two All-Irelands in three years between 1910 and

1912. These finals had signalled the resurgence of the GAA in a county which, in keeping with the national

trend, suffered serious decline in the early 1890s. Prior to that, the Dundalk Young Irelands, a club founded

by the Young Ireland Society in 1885, contested the very first All-Ireland football final in 1887. Dundalk was

a hotbed of early GAA activity in the county and, indeed, an urban-rural divide would remains a feature of

the make-up of Louth’s All-Ireland winning teams of 1910 and 1912 – teams that were dominated by play-

ers from clubs in the urban centres of Dundalk and Drogheda. Louth did not win another All-Ireland until

1957 and have not won one since. The 1912 Louth (Tredaghs) team comprised J. Smith (captain), M. Byrne,

J. Clarke, J. Quinn, J. Fitzsimmons, J. Mulligan, E. Burke, L. McCormack, J. Reilly, J. Bannon, D. Warren, J.

Johnstone, O. Markey, T. Matthews, J. Campbell, J. Brennan, S. Fitzsimmons.
