1876 (July 12) Letter from Arthur McMurrough Kavanagh, M.P.

Four page mouth-written letter from the pen of the incredible Arthur McMurrough Kavanagh, M.P., em-

bossed 10 Chester Square, London address. This letter addressed to his land agent “Devine” deals with prob-

lems of several tenants on his Carlow Estate. The letter records the “burial yesterday of Harriet Middleton

(his sister) at Hampton Court Palace - where she had apartments from the Queen”.

Born without arms or legs, Arthur served as Member of Parliament for fourteen years, travelled to Russia,

India and Persia on safari, was an expert horseman and shot, he rode with the Carlow Hunt and was a keen

yachtsman.
