Originally published in ‘The Daily Express’ and ‘The Shamrock’. Wyse
(1826-92), younger son of Sir Thomas Wyse, spent some time on the
continent and was attracted by the work of the Félibres, who claim
descent from the ancient troubadours of Provence: he joined the society
and became an ardent student of the dialect. Two pieces of his verse,
‘God Help Ireland! - 1880’ and ‘The Loyal City’, are here included.

CAIRD (James).

Longmans, Green, Reader, and Dyer,
1869. 32-pages, 8vo, recent
paper wrapper: a very good to nice copy.
With a new 1-page preface. COPAC locates five copies of this edition: it
is not in D on-line, which has the first edition only. Caird (1816–92),
agriculturist, writer and ardent free-trader, first attracted public notice in
the controversy over the repeal of the corn laws. In 1849 Peel
commissioned him to report on conditions in Ireland, then still
recovering from the famine. His report was subsequently enlarged into a
book, The Plantation System, or, The West of Ireland as a Field for
Investment (1850). This made a considerable impression and
encouraged interest in Irish land reform, resulting in substantial new
investment there of English capital (ODNB).
