The first edition edited by Thomas Morell (later editions appearing in
1778 and 1790), best remembered for his own Lexicon Graeco-
Prosodiacum (first published 1762). Morell here includes the earlier
refinements of both Samuel Patrick and J. A. Ernest, themselves editors
of Hederich’s work in 1727 and 1754. Morell was a friend of Hogarth
and Handel, supplying the libretti for many of the latter’s oratories,
including the well-known lines “See the conquering hero comes …”
