folding maps of North and South America, plans of Quebec
and Louisbourg, etc.,20 vols bound in 10, 12mo, uniform
contemporary calf, fully gilt spines, with red and green labels,
gilt: headbands worn, with some light cracks in joints but all
boards strongly secure, wanting a spine label and with one label
defective, yet a very good, unsophisticated, strongly bound and
still attractive set.
Fleeman 59. 12WD/4. Johnson wrote the (30)-pp introduction and
may have helped in the selection. Complete sets in the same edition are
remarkably uncommon. Our set comprises first editions (15-18), second
editions (19-20), third editions (2-13), and fourth editions (1 and 14).
Each of the ten double volumes bears the same near contemporary book-
label and are complete with the adverts in vols 1, 4, 10, 13 and 17 and
the blank leaf in vol 17. The imprints vary slightly throughout but all
are either Newbery alone or Carnan and Newbery combined. Roscoe

neatly cut from head of title-leaf with the loss of the first letter
of the title, the binding a little worn at corners and wanting
most of the spine label, but still very strong and sound and
otherwise a very good, completely unsophisticated copy.
An uncommon edition: ESTC locates four copies: L / NIC, CaOHM,

Fleeman 55. 4D/8. This, the first London quarto edition (the first
quarto edition was published at Dublin in 1775), was the first edition of
the Dictionary to be published following his death and also the first to
bear a portrait.

the binding strong, wanting the flyleaves, some light browning,
but a good to very good copy, with the ownership inscription of
Elnathan Camp “Bought in New York … 1775”, quoting price
and currency paid.
Fleeman 56. 1DA/6. The editor’s (Samuel
Whyte?) claim on the title-page is reinforced in the preface and adds, “As
to the Paper, Print and Correction, they will be found, on comparison,
much superior, although the Book is given for near one half of the price
of the London Edition. ”
