heated discussion in London society. Hannah More quoted Burke as
saying, in alusion to the many books being written about Johnson,
“How many maggots have crawled out of that great body!”

FIRST EDITION THUS,21 vols, roy 8vo, strongly and
handsomely bound in full contemporary brown calf, gilt
bordered sides, attractive gilt lettered and decorated spines: with
some severe wear at the lower outer corners of some boards and
a very small patch of wear at the foot of one spine, but all
bindings sound and strong without a single weak inner or outer
joint, outwardly most attractive on the shelf and internally in
quite fresh state.
A most handsome set of this enlarged edition of a key collection - the
‘Lives’ remaining an achievement beyond the correctness of its critical
evaluations.

original boards, edges uncut: with a very small closed tear in the
blank margin of the portrait and the spine worn and crudely
repaired but strong: a very good, uncut, binding copy.
C & S 111. Edited by Edmund Malone. Johnson’s ‘Considerations’,
written in 1766 to help his young friend and protégé Hamilton but never
published, were discovered amongst Hamilton’s papers when they were
being edited by Malone. Written at a time when corn was very dear and
riots had occurred, they “contain almost every thing that can be urged
in favour of the bounty. “ - McCulloch 67. The ‘Logick’ is made up of
over forty observations of parliamentary tactics and personalities. Also
included are Hamilton’s poetical works which had been privately printed
in a very limited edition in 1752. Kress B. 5371.
