FIRST (?ONLY) EDITION, pages xvi, 303, cr 8vo, original
blue cloth: with a small oval stamp in six places, a pale ink
splash on one opening, the inside front hinge weak, faint mark
on both boards indicative of the removal of a small label,
otherwise a very good copy.
A remarkably scarce narrative by a sergeant in the Rifle Brigade, First
Battalion, one of a specially selected party of nine sergeants which
embarked for Persia in 1836. The narrative extends to 1847, when he
purchased his discharge. Pp 295-303 comprise “A few suggestions on the
subject of recruiting and improving the army”.

charities by an Irish Catholic with radical sympathies who claims to
have lived in Lavenham for some thirteen years.

The W. H. Smith house manual for staff training - not regularly
published - strongly influenced by Cockerell and the Arts and Crafts
movement. An impressive overview of the history of books; paper;
letterpress printing; book illustration; methods of printing illustrations;
bookplates; bookbinding - a section on which Cockerell advised; leather
and book cloths; stationery; account books, &c.

FIRST EDITION, with 20 plates (2 folding) and 4 maps (3
folding), pages (2), xxxii, 687, (1), 8vo, original cloth, gilt:
skilful repair (barely noticable) to head of spine, lower cover
lightly marked and slight weakness in inside front hinge, still a
clean and attractive copy.
In 1858 these two intrepid ladies began a two-year tour of the Austro-
Hungarian empire, during which they were arrested as spies with ‘pan-
Slavistic tendencies’. Later they made extensive journeys across Turkey
in Europe, examining the conditions of the Slav Christians under
Turkish rule and the position and education of Christian women and
girls.
