lamp which illuminated territories and churches by preaching and good
works. “ - Annals of the Four Masters. None of his writings are known
to exist, but falsley ascribed to him is the Prophecy of the Popes, a 16C
forgery consisting of a list of mottoes supposedly fitting pontiffs from the
mid 12C to the end of time, the last being Peter II. The present two
works, supplementing Germano’s ‘Vita gesti e predittioni’ of 1670, are
remarkably uncommon: not found in NUC and COPAC has just one
copy of each (BL). They were unknown to the writer of the DNB article
(Thomas Hamilton) or to Sweeney.

MANDRIN (Louis): -.
Authentic memoirs of the
remarkable life and surprising exploits of Manadrin, Captain-
general of the French smugglers, who for the space of nine
months resolutely stood in defiance of the whole army of
France. With the copy of an intercepted letter, from one chief to
another, relating some curious particulars, concerning the taking
of Mandarin. Translated from the French. To which is added, a
geographical description of those cities, towns and castles on the
frontiers of Savoy and Switzerland, and in the Southern
provinces of France, which were the principal scenes of action.
Dublin: Printed for John Murphy, at Mrs. Owen’s, in Skinner-Row,
1755
FIRST IRISH EDITION, (60)-pp, pagination erratic but
complete, numbered 55, 60-61, 70-72, signed A8, B4, C8, D4,
E6, 12mo, period style quarter calf, with label, gilt: very good.
ESTC locates five copies (1 imperfect and 1 a microfilm): L, C, D
(microfilm) and RIA: the Gilbert Library copy lacks the title-page.
There are two London editions of the same year, both very scarce.
Despite the erratic pagination the book is complete. The collation given
in ESTC is incorrect. Mandarin (1724-55) was a celebrated leader of
smugglers and brigands active on the Franco-Swiss border in the 1740’s
and 1750’s. A military campaign was raised against him and he was
captured in Savoy in May 1755. He was tortured and broken on the
wheel at Valence later the same month. The anonymous English
translator throws in references to some contemporary English
desperadoes and gives a 16-page gazetteer of places mentioned in the
text. John Murphy, the publisher of this first Irish edition, was active in
the Dublin book trade between 1739 and 1783. This appears to be his
first publication, probably coincident with his succession to Mary
Owen’s business in the same year (cf. Pollard, Dictionary, pages. 422-3).
