Hume procured the publication of his dialogues on Deism, and Sherlock
warmly commended them. This present pamphlet was inspied by what
he witnessed during a period of famine. His local knowledge, and his
lifelong struggle against poverty well equipped him to write
authoritatively. It contains useful information on current costs and
prices of commodities and calls for the extension of tillage farming and
the erection of public granaries to alleviate future distress.
