ROMNEY (George): - Hayley (Wm.).
The Life of George
Romney, Esq.
Chichester: Printed by W. Mason, for T. Payne,
1809
FIRST EDITION, with 12 striking engraved plates by Caroline
Watson and others after Romney, including one by William
Blake, pages (2), 2, (5, contents list), (3, preface), 416, complete
thus, 4to, half dark brown morocco, gilt letered spine, edges gilt,
by Bumpus: the binding lightly rubbed at corners and with some
very slight foxing in a few places, but still a very good, well-
margined copy, with the Castle Hacket book-label, attractively
bound.
Hayley (1745-1820), poet, began his friendship with Romney in 1777.
His ‘Life of Romney’ was coldly received and was attacked by John
Romney in his ‘Memoirs of Romney’, which he published in 1830.
Nevertheless, Hayley’s biography, though eulogistic, is based on his own
acquaintance with the artist and is unquestionably a most interesting
personal assessment. Blake had expected to play a full part in the
illustration of the book but the role of engraver in chief originally
intended for him was taken by Caroline Watson. Nonetheless, Blake
was closely involved with other elements of the project and acted as
Hayley’s London agent for the book with the particular task of
discovering the location of Romney’s paintings.
