8vo, recent wraps: very good.
One of five editions published in 1794 - Dublin (2), London, Perth and
New York - ESTC locates just six copies of this London edition: 4 in
UK and 2 in USA - none in Ireland, though there is a copy on-line in
D. An edition not in O’Higgins. Rowan (1751-1834), United Irishman,
imprisoned for an allegedly seditious address to the Volunteers in 1794,
escaped after he was dangerously compromised by the Rev William
Jackson, going first to France where he became friendly with Mary
Wollstonecraft and then to Philadelphia. Disenchanted with
revolutionary politics following the French Terror, he accepted a pardon
in 1803 and settled in Co Down. He was, incidentally, one of the first
persons to whom Shelley addressed himself on his memorable visit to
Dublin in 1812.

SADLER (Michael T.).
Ireland; its evils, and their
remedies: being a refutation of the errors of the Emigration
Committee and others, touching that country. To which is
prefixed, a synopsis of an original treatise, about to be
published, on the Law of Population; developing the real
principle on which it is universally regulated.
John Murray,
1828
FIRST EDITION, pages (12), lviii, 414, 8vo, near contemporary
polished calf, gilt bordered sides, gilt panelled spine, with double
and contrasting labels, gilt: a very good copy
First edition of an important work by this social reformer and political
economist. It is, in effect, a protest against the application of
individualistic political economy to the problem of Irish distress,
including much on the social condition of the people, absenteeism,
emigration, free trade, population, etc. He proposes the establishment of
a poor law in Ireland on the principle that in proportion to its means
“wealth should be compelled to assist destitute poverty, but that,
dissimilar to English practice, assistance should in all cases, except in
those of actual incapacity from age or disease, be closely connected with
labour”.
