1914-18: South Irish Horse tunic of Lieutenant Colonel Fred MacCabe
An extremely desirable original late war officers tunic with South Irish
Horse buttons by Henecy & Son of Dublin, overseas service stripes to
cuff and attached medal ribbons of the Queen’s South Africa Medal,
1914-15 Star and The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint
John of Jerusalem. Also with original attributing documents, Edward VII
commission certificate promoting Frederick Faber MacCabe as a Surgeon
Lieutenant on 14 September 1903 in the South of Ireland Imperial
Yeomanry. Trinity College Latin vellum medical degree of MacCabe. 1937
South Irish Horse London reunion dinner menu with name of MacCabe
noted and a pair of brass spurs. (5 items)
Frederick Faber MacCabe was born in Waterford in 1868. He served as a
civilian surgeon during the Boer War and was commissioned as medical
officer to the South of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry in 1903. A man of
many talents he also worked as a horse trainer at Glencairn House,
Sandyford, Dublin and trained the famous horse Orby, owned by Richard
Croker, to become the first Irish trained winner of the Epsom Derby.
During the First World War he served as medical officer for the South
Irish Horse on the Western Front from June 1915, being promoted to the
rank of Lieutenant Colonel by 1918. He died in 1954.

1936-40: Palestine General Service Medal to Wiltshire Regiment Irish
casualty
General Service Medal (GVI 1st type) with clasp ‘Palestine’ officialy
named to 5569276 Pte. J. T. Fallon Wilts. R. Private John Fallon is
recorded as being born in Ireland. He was killed on 21 May 1940, aged
28, while his battalion were dug into the banks of the River Scarpe in
northern France during the retreat to Dunkirk.

1936-43: Royal Irish Fusiliers casualty and MID medal group of five
1939-45 Star, Africa Star (with 1st Army clasp), Italy Star, Defence
Medal, War Medal and General Service Medal (GVI 1st type) with clasp
‘Palestine’. The last officially named to 6979443 Fsr. D. P. O’Connell R. Ir.
Fus (rubbing to number). 6979443 Fusilier Daniel P. O’Connell was later
promoted to Sergeant and killed on 16 November 1943 with the 2nd
Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers. He was the son of Daniel and Ellen
O’Connell, of Spangle Hill, Cork and is commemorated on the Athens
Memorial. He was also mentioned in despatches, London Gazette 13
September 1945.
