screenprint in colour with diamond dust; (no. 216 from an edition
of 300)
signed and numbered lower right
40 by 32in. (101.60 by 81.28cm)
Younger brother of John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy, Edward Moore
“Ted” Kennedy (1932 -2009) was elected to the US Senate in 1962 and
became a long serving senator and influential party leader over the
course of his life. The present work was created as a fundraiser by Warhol
for Kennedy’s presidential campaign in 1980, which he lost to Jimmy
Carter whom the artist had portrayed four years previously. Here Warhol
incorporates the blue and red of the American flag with thin gestural lines
of colour. The glamour of politics is suggested by the highlights of
diamond dust which add another dimension to the portrait.
An example from this edition can be found in the National Portrait Gallery,
