1914-1923 Laurence Ginnell: An important archive of his papers

including the 1916 Rising

Includes Ginnell’s handwritten draft of his proposed 1914 Irish Land Bill,

pp22, printed bill, and two other related bills, an undated pp7 shorthand

manuscript on House of Commons paper, the last page in full script

referring to religion and treason, 1916 Rising typescript of Pearse’s “Last

Bulletin from Republican Headquarters Dublin 29th April 1916”, carbon

copies of typed statements including statements and accounts by an Irish

Volunteer pp5, various statements by witnesses of the Rising pp15, “The

Female Prisoners” pp3, “Captain Colbert” pp3 by a female prisoner, “John

[Sean] Mac DErmott’s treatment the night of his execution”, and various

others, pp5, 1921 Ginnell’ as “Envoy Extraordinary of The Republic of

Ireland” in Buenos Aires, two files of correspondence with Frank egan in

Chile and Gaspar Nicolls in Bolivia, including printed notice of Associacion

Nacional Irlandesa, etc., Ginnell’s address to the Dail in 1922 pp3, Irish

Legation Circulars, Washington USA1923, etc. A rare assemby of primary

source material concerning Ginnell.

Laurence Ginnell (1852-1923) was an Irish nationalist politician, lawyer and was

eklected Irish Parliamentary Party MP iat Westminster for Westmeath North at the

1906 UK general election. From 1910 he sat as an Independent Nationalist and at the

1918 general election he was elected for Sinn Féin. The last great social and agrarian

campaign of the home rule movement – the Ranch War (1906 and 1909), was largely

led and organised by Ginnell.

In Westminster he was highly critical of the British Government’s war policy, and its

executions of the Easter Rising leaders. On 9 May he accused the British Prime

Minister H. H. Asquith, of “Murder”, and was forcibly ejected from the assembly

He was imprisoned in March 1918 for encouraging agitation, and later deported to

Reading Gaol. In the 1918 general election, he was elected as a Sinn Féin MP and in

1919 sat in Dáil Éireann.. Ginnell was appointed Director of Propaganda of the Irish

Republic. He was appointed the Representative of the Irish Republic in Argentina and

South America. He opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty and was elected as an anti-Treaty

Sinn Féin TD at the 1922 general election. He returned to the United States soon after

this to serve as the Ant-Treaty Republicans’ envoy and died there in 1923.

1918 Ginnell, Laurence. Ireland’s Case for Freedom - author’s annotated

and edited copy.

The Irish Republic Why?, originally published in New York by The Friends of

Irish Freedom, inscribed “wrung out of my hands by policemen 3 June 1919

in..Athlone”,annotated and edited in ink by Ginnell and re-titled for

publication in Ireland, “written in Mountjoy Prison, Summer 1918”, unique

item. Also with this lot: Ginnell’s The Doubtful Grant of Ireland, 1899,

Dublin, inscribed by the author to PJ Weymes TC, Kinnegad, a booklet

Fighting Larry Ginnell by Padraig O Lionard, scarce Leabhar na mBan 1918,

two copies of Nationality - 2 and 9 March 1918, Irish Victory Loan handbill,

Dail Eireann notice by Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins promoting the

National Loan, etc. (9)

1917 Irish National Volunteers important archive of letters, ephemera

and newspaper cuttings.

An album containing two letters, one handwritten, from Colonel Maurice

Moore, Inspector General of the INV to Captain Toorish in Strabane

concerning the National Convention, also to same recipient two

handwritten letter from JA Echersly, a mimeographed statement by Colonel

Moore, admission ticket to the INV Second Convention on 5 August 1917

and a comprehensive collection of news cuttings concerning the INV, also a

couple of handbills including Roger Casement Sinn Féin Club Strabane. A

valuable collection of rare and unique items.

1917 issued for Hugh O’Rourke “having regard to his associations in the

United States with persons concerned in German attempts to stir up

rebellion in Ireland” etc., signed by Governor of Brixton Prison, 2pp

foolscap, and 1918 to Joseph Macconastair also known as Nestor “having

regard to his admission that he has given the enemy useful information for

their fleet” etc. Accompanied by a notated typed judgement from Lord

Chief Justice on the application of The Defence of The Realm Act in

mainland Britain. (3)
