New York born Roy Lichtenstein is synonymous with the Pop Art Movement that emerged in the late 1950s in the US
and challenged the tradition of fine art by employing aspects of mass culture, such as advertising and everyday cultural
objects. Lichtenstein came to prominence with his use of the cartoon characters Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and
later his adapted comic-book panels such as Whaam! (1963,Tate Modern, London).
Still Life with Lobster is part of the ‘Six Still Lifes Series’ from the mid-1970s which explored the conventions of old
master still life painting. The series was co-published by Multiples, Inc. and Castelli Graphics, New York.
