SIR JOHN LEES, BARONET, c.1811

Sir John Lees was born in Ayrshire, Scotland c.1737. He

distinguished himself early in life with the British Army in

Germany under the command of Marquis Granby. Sir John Lees

travelled to Ireland in 1767 as private Secretary to the Lord

Lieutenant, Lord Townshend. He was appointed secretary to the

Irish Post Office, where he organised a very well run mail coach

system. Sir John Lees was appointed 1st Baronet Lees, of

Blackrock, Dublin on June 30, 1804.
