Built in 1794 to the design of Francis Johnston, Townley Hall is widely regarded as Johnston’s classical masterpiece. The
last member of the Townley family to reside there was Mrs Townley Balfour, on whose death in 1954 it was inherited
by Mr David Crichton, who sold it to Trinity College Dublin in 1956. A watercolour by Reid of Townley Hall sold through
Whyte’s on 30 April 2007 as lot 59.
