Ardagh Chalice an Irish silver replica
By George Edwards and Son. Of heavy gauge, the bowl and foot
mounted with enamel cabouchon studs, Dublin, 1919. Total weight
43oz troy, 1338g.
Purchased in 1966 from the estate of Sir Harry Lauder (1870-1950) the
Scottish music hall and vaudeville theatre singer and comedian.
The original was an eighth to tenth century AD two-handled chalice
of an elaborate construction with over two hundred and fifty main
components. The bowl and foot were made of beaten, lathe-polished
silver, the stemwas cast gilt-copper alloy. It was decorated with gold
filigree, granulation, multi-coloured enamels, a large rock-crystal, amber,
malachite, knitted cast, stamped and openwork metal objects.
