Gordon-Cumming, traveller and sportsman, was the
second son of Sir William Gordon Gordon-Cumming.
In 1843, with an ox wagon and a few native followers
set out for the interior of Africa. He hunted chiefly in
Bechuanaland and the valley of the Limpopo River,
regions then swarming with big game. His account Five
Years of a Hunter’s Life in the Far Interior of South Africa”
was published in 1850. This figure was probably created
in 1856 to coincide with the publication of an abridged
version of his book called “The Lion Hunter of South
Africa””
