The blade etched with Royal and Imperial cypher, ‘Gold - Coast - Police’, ‘L.H. Massey’ and the brand of Hobson

and Son, Lexington Street, London. In brown leather service scabbard.

L. H. Massey, Sekondi, British West Africa was listed among 104 people killed on March 28, 1915, when the British

steamship RMS Falaba was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-28. One American passenger, Leon Chester

Thrasher, a 31-year-old mining engineer from Massachusetts was also among the dead. The death of an American

citizen on board a civilian ship caused a major diplomatic incident and was a significant step in America’s march to

war.
