1923-24. Letters and sketches from Professor August Weckbecker, German sculptor and stained glass artist to
Carlow priest.
Correspondence is addressed to Fr. Michael Bolger, P.P., Carlow relating to commissions in Ireland. In the letters
Prof. Weckbecker refers to his working on bust and portrait of Pope Pius XI in the Vatican and a bust of Sir Roger
Casement. The Casement bust was acquired by the National Gallery of Ireland in 1963. During his time in Carlow
Weckbecker designed a monument to Fr. Hugh Cullen in Killeshin. He also designed the stained-glass window,
Stations of the Cross, a relief of the Entombment , a tabernacle, and two murals for the church at St Dympna’s
Hospital. The lot includes a photocopied catalogue of his works. (11)
