Heaney, Seamus. Death of a Naturalist, first

edition.

1966, London, Faber and Faber, first UK edition / 3rd

impression. 8vo, boxed in custom-made protective

slip-case, title etc, in gilt on spine.

Death of a Naturalist (1966) is Heaney’s earliest

volume which characteristically incorporates vivid

memories of his childhood in Northern Ireland. As

with his later works, nature plays a dominant role

within this work. Heaney announces in the first

poem of the collection that he will figuratively “dig”

with his poem, echoing the nurturing practice of his

farming ancestors and their own connection with

the land.

Estimate €500-€700 (approx £425-£595)
